Abstract

This research investigates the effect of the Duolingo mobile language learningapplication on the speaking ability of tenth-grade EFL students at SMA Negeri 1Bahorok. A true experimental design was employed, involving two groups: anexperimental group and a control group, each consisting of 36 students. Theexperimental group received 15 minutes of guided Duolingo usage daily for 15days, in addition to regular English instruction, while the control group followedonly the standard curriculum. Students’ speaking abilities were assessed using amodified IELTS speaking test, evaluated based on four criteria: pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, and grammar.Pre-test results showed the experimental group had a mean score of 3.44 with astandard deviation of 1.81, while post-test results rose significantly to a mean scoreof 6.22 with a standard deviation of 1.97. A paired sample t-test revealed acalculated t-value of 13.083, which was greater than the critical t-value of 2.032 ata 5% significance level (α = 0.05). This indicates a statistically significantimprovement in the students' speaking ability after using the Duolingo application. The results support the conclusion that mobile-assisted language learning tools likeDuolingo can effectively enhance EFL learners' speaking skills when used as asupplement to conventional teaching methods.
