THE EFFECT OF USING DICTATION AS A TESTING DEVICE IN LISTENING SKILL TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ ABILITY OF THE FIRST GRADE STUDENTS AT SMP PAB UTAMA

The objective of the study is to know the significant effect of using Dictation as atesting device in listening skill to improve students’ ability of the first gradestudents at SMP PAB Utama. The method applied in this research was quantitativemethod in the design is Quasi experimental. Two classes were taken as the sampleof the study with 20 students in each class. The classes were designed as anexperimental class and controlled class. The experimental class was taught by usingDictation method while the controlled class was taught by using conventionalmethod. The students’ population at SMP PAB Utama are 40 students, and thesamples were 40 students (20 students for the experimental class and 20 studentsfor the controlled class). The sampling technique that used was total populationsampling. Moreover, this research was conducted through the following proceduresgiving pre-test, applying treatments, and giving post-test. The data analyzed in thisresearch was gained through multiple choice. The result of the conclusion that intesting the hypothesis, the value of t-observation (to) was 1.896, and t-table (tt) atsignificance level of 5% was 1.686. It means to > ttable , then 1.896> 1.686. So, thealternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected.Based on the result, it can be concluded that using Dictation as a testing device inlistening skill was effective on increasing students’ listening at the first gradestudents at SMP PAB UtamaReferences
