CINDERELLA (FRANCE-ENGLAND), FRAU HOLLE (GERMANY), AND GARLIC RED ONION (INDONESIA) (Comparative Study of Folklore Structure)
Comparative Study of Folklore Structure
Abstract
This study aims to compare the structure of the French-English folktales of Cinderella, Frau Holle from Germany, and Bawang Merah Bawang Putih from Indonesia. This type of research uses qualitative research with a comparative descriptive method. The research instrument is the researcher himself with analysis guidelines using AJ Greimas' theory. The data sources of the three folktales were quoted from the E-book written by Brüder Grimm in the Frau Holle story and from the article written by Charles Perrault in the Cinderella story and also the article obtained from EF kids and teen in the bawang merah bawang putih story. Data collection and analysis techniques use comparative studies. Data analysis techniques are carried out by comparing elements in the three folktales using AJ Greimas' theory. The results show that the three folktales have similar structures. It can be concluded that the similarity of the story structure is the background of the main character, followed by the conflict that occurs, where the main character experiences difficulties in his life. However, there are clear differences in the plot, conflict, and ending of the three stories. The storylines of the French-English "Cinderella", the German "Frau Holle", and the Indonesian "Bawang Merah Bawang Putih" have slight differences, the story of Frau Holle has a special difference, where it is not explained why the main character lives with her mother and stepsisters.Published
