MEASUREMENT OF THE HIGHEST DIPTHONG FORMANT USING PRAAT

Abstract

This study is aimed to analyzing the highest dipthong fomant values in determining the highest vowel derived from the voice of non-native speakers, who are students of English Literature, The State Islamic University of Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi. This study relates to phonetic acoustics by using the Praat application to know the duration and formant of dipthongs. The subject of this study is some words that are usually heard or spoken in Indonesian, based on six students as respondent in uttering those word. The research method  used in this study was the audio method. However, in this study, the researcher only focused on identifying differences in duration and formant among respondents. The data was subjected to descriptive analysis with the presentation of the data in the form of numerical tables. The results of this study indicate that dipthongs with the highest formant value from those words was /ei/, and those with the longest duration was /ai/. Keywords: Dipthong, Measurement, Praat, Vowel
