Abstract

In Indonesia, especially North Sumatra, the problem of poverty is one of the issues that has become the center of attention of the government, both central and local governments. Even though the poverty rate has decreased, the fact is that many people are still living on the poverty line. This research will discuss several factors such as population density, open unemployment rate, per capita GRDP at constant prices, per capita GRDP at current prices, economic growth, life expectancy, and the Human Development Index which affect poverty in Indonesia. Discriminant analysis method is used to find out the factors that most influence and differentiate poverty rates in the Regency/City of North Sumatra. Discriminant analysis is a multivariate analysis technique used to classify data into a group based on the dependent and independent variables. By using discriminant analysis, it is proven that the factors that influence poverty are population density, life expectancy, and the human development index.
