Abstract

Developing an environmentally conscious character is not an instant process; it requires ongoing habituation and collective support from the entire school community. A shared commitment to maintaining cleanliness and sustainability is a crucial prerequisite for achieving a conducive and sustainable education. This study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical design. Data were collected through a survey and then analyzed using data reduction, data presentation, and verification to draw valid conclusions. The results of the study showed a significant difference in the percentage of student responses regarding environmental awareness behavior in the two Islamic schools studied. At State Islamic Senior High School XY Medan, the percentage of students who still litter in the school environment reached 68%. Meanwhile, at State Islamic Senior High School XY Deli Serdang, the percentage was higher, namely 88%. This finding indicates a variation in the level of environmental awareness between educational units. The main obstacles in efforts to preserve the school environment include a low sense of concern, a lack of cohesiveness, and a lack of collective responsibility among students in one class. Nevertheless, some students showed awareness of the importance of maintaining the cleanliness and health of the school environment as a prerequisite for creating a comfortable, enjoyable, and effective learning atmosphere.
